Perfume Genius : Grid

This video is fucking weird and that is why I love it. Having recently become infatuated with Perfume Genius and the heavy mystery that accompanies him, I would have expected nothing less from one of his music videos.

“Grid” was the first song that turned me on to Hadreas’s sound which is notably stranger, louder and bolder than any of his previous work. The reason I really love this music video (and album, Too Bright) is because of it’s density. It is full and tangible with meaning and it is uncomfortable, odd and flamboyant and it is the epitome of Perfume Genius. Take a look at this video if you haven’t, and more importantly, have a thorough listen through his collection of work.

Good Ol’ Johnny Ripper

[ Johnny Ripper – Joan ]

One of the first posts I ever made on here was of Johnny Ripper. I found his music through a video of Kilian Martin done by Brett Novak and instantly was intrigued. Johnny Ripper’s style calls for an acquired taste, but at the same is type of sound that can grow on you. Anyway, the song I posted back in August was called “Noah’s Ark” (which technically, he only featured in but that is besides the point) and awhile after posting that I kind of stopped looking at his stuff. However, recently I’ve found myself digging through his odd collection of work and found a couple gems that I really dig. This song, “Joan” (just released about two weeks ago) seemed to have a fuller and different sound for Johnny Ripper, which I think is why it really stuck out to me. Of course, all his music is pretty weird, so it is hard at times to fit all of his work into one simple definition. If you are not a huge fan of him, or have yet to hear him, I’d start off with this song to help ease you into the bizarre experimental sound that is Johnny Ripper.
